ECOLA

European Conference of Leading Architects
Award for the Use of Render in Architecture

Competition & Conference

ECOLA combines a European competition for architecture with a conference showcasing all aspects of render as a material. The competition and conference were born out of the Bundesdeutschen Architekturpreis Putz (the federal architectural award for render) that was founded in Germany in the year 2000. Today, as back then, the awards are bestowed by Sto SE & Co. KGaA and the Federal Association for Finishing and Facade in the Umbrella Association of the German Building Industry (Bundesverband Ausbau und Fassade im Zentralverband des Deutschen Baugewerbes).

The competition invites nominees from one-off projects or overall concepts for urban development that use render as a material to make an architectural statement. There are two award categories:
  • New builds or urban development concepts in which render is a prominent material
  • Refurbishments (including projects with listed-building protection) where there is an obligation to use render responsibly

The ECOLA conference is a melting pot for presentations, workshops and excursions on the topic of “Architecture and render”.
ECOLA has taken place five times since 2006. The 2018/2019 event is its sixth appearance on the calendar. 19 nominating judges are submitting nominations for 100 projects from up to 44 countries. An international jury will select two winners and two commendable mentions from the nominated projects in May 2019.

The winners, commendable mentions, nominating jurors, and judges will be invited to share their experiences and knowledge about all aspects of render as a material and attend the glittering awards ceremony in September 2019 at the ECOLA Conference in Tallinn.
